Benny "The Jet" Urquidez

Although we know who this once Great Champion is, we were surprised how many did not... Shame on you Boys and Girls! If your going to excel in a sport, it's best to learn about it's history and those who got it to where it is today long before you were a fan or stepped into the fighting ring.

Benny "The Jet" Urquidez was one of the most explosive American kickboxers of all time! Today he is a martial arts choreographer, actor but most proudly today, a Teacher. Nicknamed The Jet, Urquidez was a non-contact karate competitor who later pioneered full-contact fighting in the U.S.

He made the transition from point to full-contact karate in 1974 (The year of its inception in the USA) frequently fighting in bouts where the rules were ambiguous and contrasts in styles were dramatic.

After winning five World Championships in four separate weight divisions, Urquidez retired in 1989. However Urquidez came out of retirement in 1993 (at the age of 42) to seal his legendary status. He challenged and defeated the 25-year-old reigning world champion from Japan, victorious now in six world championships in five different weight divisions - a feat never seen before or since.

Urquidez retired from professional competition, remaining undefeated for 27 years, the longest reigning World Champion ever. Black Belt magazine voted Urquidez "Competitor of the Year" in 1978.

Although records may vary from web site to web site, there is no question how dynamic of a fighter Urquidez was, making the questions about his actual fight record irrelevant. Wikapedia claims his record as 49-1-1 (win-loss-draw) with 35 knockouts. However others claim he went undefeated with a record of 62-0 (57 wins by knockouts.). Again, regardless of the complete record, NO ONE can argue "The Jets" Greatness as a true Champion and Lagend in our sport!
