Crowned New IKF Pro Muay Thai World Champion

Ognjen Topic of Lodi, New Jersey, USA can add another impressive win to his already impressive record.
Down on 2 of the three scorecards and dead even on 1 leading into the final round, Topic stopped the number 1 contender, Jose Uribe of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico by TKO at 126 of round 5. this past Friday night at Sierra Madre Productions "FINAL DESTINY" at La Riveria in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.

If you watched this years Super Bowl between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots, you may have seen a similarities with this bout. Round 1 was more of a punchers battle. Although kicks were thrown, it was the hands that did the damage and most of that damage was done by Uriby. He came out landing the majority of his shots with damage as Topic played more of a defensive game.

Round two saw both fighter start kicking more but the two seemed to stay away from the clinch. Oh, they did clinch, but neither had any damaging success while there. Round two also saw Topic get his first warning about leading with his head. Uribe had pointed it out earlier to Referee Dan Stell earlier in the round but Stell didn't see it. When he did he issued an official warning to Topic. As the round continued Topic seemed to score more with his kicks then his hands but Uribe was starting to really unload with his hands. As the round was coming to a close Uribe was scoring big as Topic weathered the storm to come out to round three.

As in this years Super Bowl, the first half of this fight was all Uribe. Clearly Topic had dug himself a hole, but this was familiar territory for the Jersey boy. Topic has always been known for being a slow starter and as round three got underway, we started to see him get into his rhythm. Topic finally getting his combinations together and he was now starting to score his own power shots. We also saw the first "Scoring" elbows that actually did some damage in this round. Both threw them and scored but it was Topic who scored enough for all three of the judges to give him the round after the same three judges gave Uribe rounds one and two.

Round four was again Topic's round and as for Uribe, it seemed his cornerman took his focus away from his job at hand as he choose to complain more and more about all kinds of things instead of keeping focused on the fight. Standing up in the corner, grabbing the ropes, yelling at the referee. It was almost like Uribe's cornerman was losing the fight for him. As Uribe's cornerman seemed to take Uribe's focus away from the fight, it was Topic who stayed focused at the task at hand scoring over and over again on various combinations.

However, round four was also a costly round for Topic. He had been warned about leading with his head in the prior rounds by Referee Dan Stell but in round four, he slammed heads with Uribe opening a cut to the side of Uribe's left eye. This time Referee Stell had had enough and gave Topic a one point deduction. The point cost Topic dearly in a round that he seemed to clearly win.

As the bell rang in round four Topic knew he had to make up ground to get ahead which is exactly what he did. With the point deduction and in a different country, Topic was worried he needed a knockout to win so at the bell he jumped on Uribe and in the opening seconds scored a knockdown with a strong body kick. Again Uribe's corner jumped off his stool leaning into the ring during the count. Uribe rose up and confirmed he was OK to continue. However as a wild animal smells the blood of a wounded meal, Topic jumped all over Uribe with a barrage of punches, elbows and even a head kick which brought Referee Dan Stell to step in and stop the bout at 1:26 of round 5. There was no argument from Uribe but once his cornerman jumped in the ring and went after Stell before he was eventually restrained.

This was a war. Both fighters left all they had in the ring. If our opinion counted (which it doesn't) it seemed like a lack of fight focus took Uribe out of his game. We've seen this before where a trainer can get so worked up over something they forget the task at hand.

This was a sad thing to see unfold in front of our eyes, especially with two great athletes as Uribe and Topic. In the end it was Topic's cornerman Ray Cruz who kept Topic focused at the task at hand and simply put, "Finished Strong!"

As for Uribe, word has it this may have been his last fight. However, from what we saw, he still has a lot of fight left in him... A LOT! Who knows, maybe we will see him in the ring again, but if not, hats off to him for a great competitive bout and of course, an obviously fantastic fighting career.

As for Topic, the win solidifies his talent even more and what's next is yet to be seen. He's surly willing to accept any challenge and when he does, we can only hope we're there for it. Congrats Mr. Topic on becoming the new IKF Pro Muay Thai World Champion!

   • Ramirez was hit with an accidental low blow in the opening seconds of round one and was unable to continue.

Prior to this event trip our entire IKF Staff was told over and over again to
"Watch Out - Mexico isn't safe anymore..."

Well, after our week there, we need to tell everyone first hand that not only was Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico safe, but the hospitality was outstanding. It seemed that everywhere we went and everyone we met from the Security agents at the airport to the hotel and event staff, everyone was kind and friendly.

Having been busy with IKF California, it was an exceptional change for me ( Steve Fossum ) personally. Since the California State Athletic Commission delegated the regulatory duties of Muay Thai and Kickboxing in the state to the IKF in March of 2014, we started to see big changes in quite a few (not all) of the individuals we came in contact with. The IKF office and event staff went from individuals everyone "Wanted" to talk with to individuals people "Had" to talk with.

Instead of a positive experience, our work became a need and requirement to everyone in California, and it was tearing us all apart from the inside. We've always been known as the organization that treated everyone with respect and honor and were always welcome with open arms wherever we went to sanction events around the world. However, when we became a regulated law and requirement in California, many turned cold to the IKF and our event and office staff, so much that we were truly getting burned out on the sport and to be honest, had lost a vast majority of the passion we once had for a sport we've always loved.

Enter Felix Perez and his desire to once again bring the IKF to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This wasn't the first time he's brought us to his beautiful city. He's now had several IKF World Title events and has made the IKF an honored title to have in Mexico. I have to say,

"Felix... You rekindled our passion for what the IKF was made to do, and for that, we all thank you greatly!"

You and the fighters, trainers, officials and fans of Mexico reminded us of what it felt like to be truly "wanted" again instead of "Required". We never started the IKF, nor did we intend, to be "Required" in any sense. We started the IKF for those in the sport, to bring recognition and credibility to the sport that it seemed, no other sanctioning body cared to do for it.

Felix, you and the people of Mexico brought back a feeling of passion I honestly thought I'd lost for good in dealing with some of the negative attacks we've seen in California Muay Thai. So much that it's rare that I go to events anymore. I don't mean everyone in the CA Muay Thai scene are bad. However there are quite a few that have no appreciation for all the work all of us in the IKF put in every day to help build the sport as well as bring it recognition and credibility, for them...

I've been turning down a lot of travel opportunities around the world because of our work in IKF CA. However, it's clear I have to visit more and more IKF events outside California when asked to attend, especially those that bring our passion back where it's needed as this event did so we can do great things for Muay Thai and Kickboxing. In other words, we need to get back to our original focus as stated on the IKF History page.

Felix and Mexico... All of us at the IKF Thank you and IKF Mexico for not only your support of the IKF over the years but your respect, appreciation and hospitality you've always had for those of us associated with Muay Thai and the IKF every time we visit. You will always have our support and we eagerly look forward to the next time we can visit once again.
